How to make a neck warmer

1. Materials & tools

Materials (standard size)

• Main fabric (fleece, knit or faux fur) — about 55 × 30 cm (22 × 12 in)
• Optional: lining fabric for a double layer — the same amount

Tools

• Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
• Fabric marker or pencil
• Ruler and scissors
• Iron
• Pins or clips

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

1. Open the tool
   Open the pattern tool and choose “Accessories” → “Neck warmer” from the tabs at the top.
2. Enter the size
   Enter the finished circumference and height. Presets cover child, standard and long.
3. Set the seam allowance
   Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
4. Print
   Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

1. Trace the pattern
   It is a rectangle, so mark it straight onto the fabric.
2. Cut
   Cut one piece, or two if you are lining it.
3. Finish the edges
   Fleece can be left raw. Anything that frays needs the top and bottom hemmed.

4. Sewing

4-1. Single layer

1. Fold the fabric right sides together and sew the short edges into a loop.
2. Turn the top and bottom edges under and hem. On fleece you can leave them raw.

4-2. Double layer

1. Make two loops, one in each fabric, by sewing the short edges.
2. Slip one inside the other, right sides together, and sew all the way around one edge.
3. Turn through the open edge, fold the remaining raw edges inward and stitch them closed.

✏️ Size it to your neck plus ease — but if the fabric does not stretch, check it will go over your head first. Anything smaller than your head circumference simply will not go on.

5. Tips & variations

• Check the head measurement: with non-stretch fabric, make the inner circumference at least 56–58 cm (22–23 in).
• Longer is warmer: extra height lets you pull it up over your chin.
• For dogs too: the dog snood pattern is the same idea in dog sizes.
