How to make baby leg warmers
The simplest baby make: sew a tube and hem the ends. Leg warmers keep little legs cozy, protect knees during crawling, and make diaper changes easy. Stretch knit is comfiest.
1. Materials & tools
Materials (one pair)
- Knit fabric (ribbing, jersey, interlock) — two 25 cm squares
- Tip: stretch fabric is best; add a little ease if using a woven
Tools
- Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
- Fabric marker or pencil
- Ruler and scissors
- Iron
- Pins or clips
2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)
With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.
- Open the tool
Open the pattern tool and choose “Baby” → “Baby leg warmers” from the tabs at the top. - Enter the size
Enter the leg circumference and length. Knit fabric hugs without binding. - Set the seam allowance
Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in). - Print
Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.
3. Cutting the fabric
- Cut 2
Cut 2 (left and right) from the rectangle pattern. For knit, run the stretch around the leg. - Use a stretch stitch

4. Sewing
4-1. Sew into a tube
- Fold each piece in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew the long edge into a tube.
- Press the seam open or to one side.
4-2. Hem the ends
- Turn each end under and topstitch to hem, using the dashed fold guide.
5. Tips & variations
- Use ribbing: ribbing grips gently and looks neat.
- Repurpose: an old jersey sleeve makes instant leg warmers.
- Toddler arm warmers: the same idea works for little arms.
