How to make a tissue case

A pocket-tissue cover from a single piece of fabric. Hem the two openings, fold so they overlap at the center, and sew the two sides. Straight stitching only — a great first project and a good use of scraps.

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

  1. Open the tool
Open the pattern tool and choose “Accessories” → “Tissue case” from the tabs at the top.
  2. Enter the size
Enter the tissue width, tissue height and the insertion (overlap) allowance.
  3. Set the seam allowance
Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
  4. Print
Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

  1. Trace the pattern
Trace the cut line and seam line onto the wrong side of the fabric.
  2. Cut
Cut one tall rectangle. The pattern shows the top/bottom hem folds and the center assembly fold as dashed lines.
  3. Finish the edges
Zigzag the side edges if the fabric frays.

4. Sewing

4-1. Hem the openings

  1. Fold the top and bottom edges under (double-fold) and topstitch — these become the opening edges.

4-2. Fold and sew the sides

  1. With the right side up, fold the top and bottom toward the center so the hemmed edges overlap (right sides together).
  2. Pin, then sew the two side seams.
  3. Turn right side out through the center opening and press. Pop in a pack of tissues.

5. Tips & variations

Generate the pattern for free in Katagami and print it at actual size. Change the size and try again in seconds.
