How to make a christmas stocking

1. Materials & tools

Materials (For the standard size)

• Main fabric (felt or knit) — enough for two pieces of about (length + 15 cm) × (foot + 10 cm)
• Contrast fabric (for the cuff, e.g. white boa) — about 40 × 15 cm
• Optional: felt or embroidery thread for a name or motif
• Sewing thread

Tools

• Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
• Fabric marker or pencil
• Ruler and scissors
• Iron
• Pins or clips

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

1. Open the tool
   Open the pattern tool and choose “Home” → “Christmas stocking” from the tabs at the top.
2. Enter the size
   Enter the length (cuff to heel), leg width and foot length. Presets for small (ornament), standard and large (for gifts).
3. Set the seam allowance
   Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
4. Print
   Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

1. Decide the size
   Small for a decoration, large for gifts. Cut two body pieces, mirrored (flip one over).
2. Cut
   Cut two body pieces, one or two cuffs, and one hanging loop. Felt can be left with raw edges.

4. Sewing

4-1. Sew the body

1. Right sides together, sew all around except the top opening.
2. Clip the curves at the heel and toe, then turn out through the opening. In felt, you can layer the two pieces and edgestitch instead.

4-2. Add the cuff

1. Join the cuff fabric into a ring, sew it to the opening right sides together and fold it to the outside.
2. This cuff becomes the white band like a real stocking.

4-3. Add the hanging loop

1. Fold the loop strip in four and sew, then fold it into a loop.
2. Tuck it inside the heel side (back) of the opening and sew it in.

✏️ Add the name or motif to the front piece before sewing the body together, so it comes out neat and is not hidden in the seam.

5. Tips & variations

• Decorate it: cut a name, snowflakes or a tree from felt for a festive look.
• Size by use: small for an ornament, standard for decor, large for sweets and gifts.
• Make a set: one per family member in different colors and sizes fills out the mantel or tree.
