How to make a pet scarf

1. Materials & tools

Materials (one scarf, medium dog)

• Outer (fleece or jersey) — about 50 × 15 cm
• Lining (the same) — about 50 × 15 cm
• Hook-and-loop tape (light grade) — about 5 cm
• Sewing thread

Tools

• Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
• Fabric marker or pencil
• Ruler and scissors
• Iron
• Pins or clips

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

1. Open the tool
   Open the pattern tool and choose “Pets” → “Pet scarf” from the tabs at the top.
2. Enter the size
   Enter the neck measurement, the width and the overlap. Presets cover small dogs and cats, medium dogs and large dogs.
3. Set the seam allowance
   Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
4. Print
   Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

1. Measure the neck
   Measure loosely, where the collar sits.
2. Trace the pattern
   Lay the pattern on the wrong side and trace both lines.
3. Cut the pieces
   One outer and one lining.
4. Transfer the notches
   Mark where the taper begins at each end.

4. Sewing

4-1. Sew the two layers

1. Place outer and lining right sides together and sew round.
2. Leave about 10 cm open along one long edge.
3. Trim the corner allowances diagonally.

4-2. Turn and topstitch

1. Turn through the gap and ease the corners.
2. Fold the gap's allowance inwards and topstitch all round.

4-3. Add the fastening

1. Wrap it round the neck and find where it should close.
2. Stitch the hook side to the face of one end and the loop side to the back of the other.
3. Stitch round all four sides so it cannot peel away.

✏️ Choose a light grade of hook-and-loop. A strong grade will not release if the scarf catches on something, and a scarf that cannot come away is a hazard round a neck. It needs to pull free under a light tug.

5. Tips & variations

• Safety first: light-grade tape only. It has to release if it snags.
• Fleece is light: warm, light, and quick to dry.
• Do not leave it on: use it for the walk, not all day unattended.
