How to make a crown

1. Materials & tools

Materials (For one crown)

• Main fabric (felt or heavy cotton) — about (head + 6 cm) × 20 cm
• Fusible interfacing (to stiffen the points)
• Flat elastic or hook-and-loop (to fasten the back)
• Optional: trims (sequins, beads, jewel motifs)
• Sewing thread

Tools

• Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
• Fabric marker or pencil
• Ruler and scissors
• Iron
• Pins or clips

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

1. Open the tool
   Open the pattern tool and choose “Accessories” → “Crown” from the tabs at the top.
2. Enter the size
   Enter the head circumference, height and number of points. Presets for child, adult and more points.
3. Set the seam allowance
   Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
4. Print
   Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

1. Measure the head
   Measure and enter the real head circumference. A little small is fine since elastic joins the back.
2. Cut
   Cut two crown bands (front and back). To stiffen the points, cut interfacing to the same shape and fuse it. Felt can be left with raw edges.

4. Sewing

4-1. Sew front and back together

1. Right sides together, sew the top (zigzag) edge. Leave the straight bottom open.
2. Clip into the valleys and trim the points, then turn out through the bottom opening.
3. Push the points out with an awl and press. In felt, you can just layer two pieces and edgestitch.

4-2. Make the back fasten

1. Add elastic across the back, or hook-and-loop, so it fits the head.
2. Cut the elastic a little shorter than the head so it stays put.

4-3. Decorate

1. Add sequins, beads or jewel motifs to make it read as a crown.
2. Gold or silver pens and glitter also look festive.

✏️ If the points flop, use a heavier interfacing or two layers. Even two layers of felt will stand reasonably well.

5. Tips & variations

• Change the use: few, low points for a tiara; many, tall points for a king's crown.
• For birthdays: add a number or a message for a birthday crown.
• The easiest way: cut a single layer of felt and join the back with elastic.
