How to make a wings (angel / devil)

1. Materials & tools

Materials (For a pair (4 pieces))

• Main fabric (felt, satin) — about (wing height + 10 cm) × (width × 2 + 10 cm)
• Firm fusible interfacing, or shaping wire
• An elastic harness, or safety pins (to attach to the back)
• Sewing thread

Tools

• Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
• Fabric marker or pencil
• Ruler and scissors
• Iron
• Pins or clips

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

1. Open the tool
   Open the pattern tool and choose “Accessories” → “Wings (angel / devil)” from the tabs at the top.
2. Enter the size
   Enter the wing width (one wing), wing height and number of feather tips. Presets for child and adult angel, and bat.
3. Set the seam allowance
   Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
4. Print
   Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

1. Decide the shape
   Enter width, height and feather tips. More tips read as a soft angel; fewer, pointier tips read as a bat or devil.
2. Cut
   Cut two layers per wing, four pieces in total for the pair (mirror the backs). Fuse interfacing, or insert wire after turning.

4. Sewing

4-1. Make one wing

1. Right sides together, sew the outer (feather) edge. Leave the base (the straight inner edge) open.
2. Clip into the scallops and curves, then turn out through the base opening.
3. Shape it with interfacing or wire. Make the other (mirrored) wing the same way.

4-2. Join the pair

1. Match the two wing bases at the center and sew them into a pair.
2. Add an elastic harness (two loops over the shoulders) at the center, or attach with safety pins.

✏️ If large wings droop, run a length of wire from base to tip to hold them open. Wrap the wire ends with tape so they do not damage the fabric.

5. Tips & variations

• Angel or devil: white or pastel felt for an angel, black for a devil or bat. Pointier tips read as a bat.
• Make it fluffy: layer white feathers or lace along the tips for lavish angel wings.
• Attaching: an elastic harness leaves the hands free; for small children, safety-pin it to the clothes.
