How to make a triangle headscarf
A triangle headscarf for cooking, chores or play. Just triple-fold hem the three edges. Run elastic through the base edge and it becomes a no-tie, pull-on version.
1. Materials & tools
Materials (child size)
- Fabric (cotton, oxford or sheeting) — about 60 cm square
- Optional: flat elastic (1 cm) — about 20 cm, or fabric for ties
Tools
- Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
- Fabric marker or pencil
- Ruler and scissors
- Iron
- Pins or clips
2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)
With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.
- Open the tool
Open the pattern tool and choose “Accessories” → “Triangle headscarf” from the tabs at the top. - Enter the size
Enter the base and the height. Add elastic to make it pull-on. - Set the seam allowance
Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in). - Print
Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.
3. Cutting the fabric

A triple-fold hem needs no overlocking.
4. Sewing
4-1. Hem the two angled sides
- Triple-fold and stitch the two angled (short) sides.
4-2. Hem the base
- Triple-fold and stitch the base (long) edge.
- For elastic, leave both ends open to make a channel.
4-3. Add elastic or ties
- Thread elastic through the base channel, fit to the head and secure.
- For a tie version, sew ties to the two base corners instead.
5. Tips & variations
- No-tie: the elastic version is easy for little ones to put on themselves.
- Reversible: line it with a second fabric for two looks.
- Matching set: make one with a matching apron.
