How to make a triangle headscarf

A triangle headscarf for cooking, chores or play. Just triple-fold hem the three edges. Run elastic through the base edge and it becomes a no-tie, pull-on version.

2. Make the pattern (auto-generated in Katagami)

With the Katagami pattern tool, you just enter the finished size and it drafts a seam-allowance-included pattern, tiled to print at actual size on Letter or A4.

  1. Open the tool
    Open the pattern tool and choose “Accessories” → “Triangle headscarf” from the tabs at the top.
  2. Enter the size
    Enter the base and the height. Add elastic to make it pull-on.
  3. Set the seam allowance
    Use the slider at the bottom (beginners: 1.0–1.5 cm / about 3/8–5/8 in).
  4. Print
    Press “Print (actual size)”, then in the print dialog set Scale = 100% and turn “Fit to page” OFF. Check the 50 mm calibration box on the first guide sheet with a ruler.

3. Cutting the fabric

  1. Cut 1
    Cut one triangle from the pattern.
  2. Edges
    A triple-fold hem needs no overlocking.

4. Sewing

4-1. Hem the two angled sides

  1. Triple-fold and stitch the two angled (short) sides.

4-2. Hem the base

  1. Triple-fold and stitch the base (long) edge.
  2. For elastic, leave both ends open to make a channel.

4-3. Add elastic or ties

  1. Thread elastic through the base channel, fit to the head and secure.
  2. For a tie version, sew ties to the two base corners instead.
